Collaboration on the labour rights of journalists

The Commission has been collaborating with the media for the promotion and protection of human rights and freedoms since its establishment. In 2015, the NHRCM’s 14th Report on Situation of Human Rights and Freedoms in Mongolia raised the issues concerning the labour rights of human rights defender-journalists and press & media officers. The 14th report was submitted to the Parliament along with the Commission’s relevant proposals and recommendations for its consideration.

For expanding the scope of work and strengthening the close collaboration, Commissioner Oyunchimeg Purev hosted a meeting with Ms. Borgilmaa, President of the Confederation of Mongolian Journalists and discussed about signing a Memorandum of Understanding.

As a result of the meeting, the bilateral parties agreed to carry out the following activities on the occasion of the upcoming 20th anniversary of the Commission:

- Undertake a joint-study and inquiry on implementation of the labour rights of the journalists and media officers;

- Conduct an advocacy activity towards the Parliament to consider and adopt the draft Law on Legal Status of Human Rights Defenders;

- Organize a face-to-face and online training on human rights to raise the journalists’ awareness of the human rights-based approach; and

- Select and award the “Human rights-friendly media organization” every year.
