Chief Commissioner Khunan Jargalsaikhan received the Representative of the Freedom of the Media, OSCE, Teresa Riberio on 10 October 2022. During the meeting, opinions were exchanged on the current freedom of media in Mongolia, especially terminology of the dissemination of disinformation and defamation, and whether the Commission has the power to comment on draft laws within the framework of the law.
Specifically, Chief Commissioner expressed that the commission paid special attention to freedom of media, publishing, and expression, and created a working group for drafting the Law on Freedom of Media. Thus, the commission leads law enforcement agencies, the journalism industry, and civil society organizations to reach a common understanding of the freedom of media.
He noted that the commission is assessing the security of journalists, analyzing the pressing issues of freedom of media and all the possible violations of human rights posted on social media. In response, “I am grateful that the policies and decisions of the State Great Khural of Mongolia and the Government are focused on respecting human rights and paying attention to empowering the National Human Rights Commission of Mongolia. Freedom of media, publishing, and expression of opinion are crucial factors in the effective implementation of democracy.
